Carriesa Puts Mental Health Awareness On the Radar On Her Latest Single

The foundations of Carriesa Porch’s musical journey started in her childhood diary.

The singer started playing piano in church at 9-years-old, growing up in a musical and religious household while growing up between Navasota and College Station, TX.

“Growing up going through life, different moments in life, circumstances, and adversity led me to write and was therapeutic for me,” says Carriesa. “I also enjoy writing for and producing for other artists and companies. That's my foundation with music. It's my first love.”

Porch Moved to Houston three years ago to establish her former record label which had started to grow until then things took a turn. The pain and loss stemming from that moment can be heard in her latest single “RADAR.” Originally written three years before those struggles, Porch happened to be finishing production for the track around that same time.

While Carriesa’s 2021 album Blue Diaries gives the feel of late ‘90s to early 2000s R&B—with beats reminiscent of artists such as Mary J. Blige’s “Be Without You”—“RADAR” leans more into modern sounding techniques and overtly describes mental health challenges. She talks about rising from the ashes of her downfall and the moment when things might have felt out of control.

“It was a dark space for me and that's when I finished the production on ‘RADAR,’ says Porch. “It just felt like the right time to get it done and release everything. If you listen to the song, you hear the emotion and the dark side of it.”

What is mainly emphasized in “RADAR” is acknowledging that pain and overcoming those obstacles. Carriesa wants her music to be as inspiring as it was for her while completing the song. Porch continually works on writing and producing music for herself and other artists—never giving up on her love for music.

The point is that I want people who listen to the song, I want them to feel like it's okay to be vulnerable. It's okay to not be okay. Everybody has their moments [and] everybody has that moment where, to be real, you just feel like pulling the plug on everything. That's what the song is talking about: seeking redemption and pushing through that adversity.”

Blue Diaries tells parts of Carriesa’s story leading up to “RADAR” taking pages out of her diary as a child using memories, photo albums, and documents in her parent's house to put together a visceral look into her upbringing.

“A lot of the lyrics and concepts of the songs on that album stemmed from stories from my diaries growing up and things I'd been through relationship-wise and growing into adulthood and things like that.” says Carriesa about the record, that's tracks “I.D.C.” and “VIBE” were considered for the 2022 Grammy awards. “You know how it is going to your parent's house. It's nostalgia all over again. So you just have that feeling of home so it brings back memories of what you went through, what you grew up with, and who you grew up with.”

Part two of the record is in the works, along with more projects still in the planning stages but set to happen in 2023. For now, “RADAR” gives fans a big picture of Carriesa as both an artist and music lover.

Mental health is vital, but if your mental health is not right, nothing else will be. Stay strong and know that it's okay to work on yourself.”
