Lynn Davis’ “Can I Come Over” Reflects on the Love That Was Lost as Music Changed

A busy year is in store for the R&B/soul veteran Lynn Davis, as she returns to music as a solo artist. Lynn has been hard at work throughout 2022 releasing many projects including her single and music video “Can I Come Over”, her book Above Circumstance, and her upcoming Winter 2023 album.

Deeply involved in the industry as a background vocalist, songwriter, and producer throughout the peaks of the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s, Lynn Davis has amassed pages of discography, working with stars such as Stevie Wonder, LaToya Jackson, Chaka Khan, Mick Jagger, and Mariah Carey.

She toured with Marvin Gaye on his final tour, The Midnight Love Tour in 1983, and has been a close collaborator with the Japanese singer Toshinobu Kubota and the Greek musician Yanni throughout the 1990s. She also has extensive work on film soundtracks, working with visionaries such as Steven Spielberg, Marvin Hamlisch, and Lalo Schifrin.

Her journey in music began with George Duke on his signature hit “I Want You for Myself” (1979). Lynn says, “From there I got called a lot. People wanted to know Who’s that?” As she built herself in the industry, she met and worked with Patrice Rushen, doing vocals and writing singles such as “Look Up”, “Where There is Love”, and her highest charting single “Forget Me Nots”.

“Before I even knew I was involved, I had a career. I toured the world for years, I did it all. I was living my dreams out,” Lynn says. “But I couldn’t live out of a suitcase my entire life. At some point, I had to put it away and I went on to live a regular 9-5 life.”

Lynn’s book Above Circumstance is a testimonial to her real story and experience of the music industry. It covers topics such as how to carry yourself, what to look out for, but also the harsh realities of the industry for women. In her narrative, Lynn seeks to speak to aspiring female musicians, helping them navigate the music industry while maintaining personal integrity.

Lynn’s comeback as a solo artist and her single “Can I Come Over” is a response to Lynn’s reflections of how the music industry has changed over the years. After watching the industry change in a direction that has stripped music of the guidance that it used to supply people, Lynn Davis decided to make statement pieces to supply that guidance herself.

“It’s all because of the music,” Lynn says. “I got tired of listening to this junk on the radio. I decided that I’m gonna do some real R&B, classics, soul – some real good songs.” “My nieces did not grow up with the same warm soul, the energy that we grew up with. There’s so much of great love from our music, and so many good images of what that is.”

Lynn also returns with an awareness of what her comeback means: “It’s also an act of defiance against ageism and sexism, because the music companies want to exploit little kids. I thought instead – Just do the music, and let’s let the people decide.

Her single “Can I Come Over” was met with critical acclaim. Lynn says, “In four weeks, it reached #2 in the UK and has over 25k listeners. It has a music video that accompanies it that really blows people’s minds, because they haven’t heard this kind of quality stuff in a really long time.”

Lynn wrote the single with her dearest collaborators Dennis Matckosky and Mathew Wilder, having a joyous time in her studio sessions. “Do you know what it’s like to work with someone and it all just flows out? It doesn’t feel like work. It feels like all fun.”

The single is a warm, loving single highlighting Lynn’s refined taste in soul and R&B. It also showcases that Lynn is still in tune with the present, thinking deeply about it. She chooses what sounds need to be heard around what messages need to be said, rekindling on the loving guidance that was lost as music changed character in the turn of the millennium.

Lynn is deeply inspired by her realization that she is living her purpose. “I realize that it is not about me. It really is about the music and making a statement to people. We can still put out good images, good music, and that it doesn’t have to be all raunchy and ugly.”

With this knowledge, Lynn focuses on helping others. “You don’t have to sell your soul here. But women have to have different images of what it’s like to be sexy, sensual, pretty, talented, and strong. Working in music is easier for men than women, and I’m hoping what I am doing has an effect.”

“I hope that my experience will inspire women. I’m not trying to be Beyonce. I want to inspire, motivate, and create beautiful music. That’s why I call my label Bella Records – beautiful records.”

Although Lynn has been in the music business for decades, “Can I Come Over” is the first time she has released a music video as a solo artist. She dreamed the entirety of its love-story up, picking the best team, crafting the visual narrative, and embellishing the finer details of the whole video. Her vision was made possible because of the help of her director Ski-ter Jones, “He understood my vision. Before we knew it, the 10-hour day was over. There were no hiccups, it was just a flow.”

Lynn looks forward to the release of her album, which will be on the way before March 2023. Lynn will also have two music videos on the way to that release. She previews, “I guess I’m sort of a romanticist. There’s a couple of love songs, but also stories of conscience. It all focuses on message and what I believe needs to get across.”

She is also excited to see how her book Above Circumstance will be received, releasing in the upcoming three weeks. “I really look forward to opening eyes, and letting people know.” The book will be available online as an e-book.

Lastly, Lynn would like to leave us with the message: “Really good music is here. R&B isn’t dead, it’s alive and well. Music from the soul that is meant to inspire us like Earth, Wind, & Fire never ended. That is what this is all about. It is about making real quality music.”
