SMASH Magazine: What’s the most unexpected place or moment you found inspiration for a song?
Jimmy Mallia: Driving in my car, and a phrase I said gave me an idea for my song Hey Hey. I had to pull over and write almost the entire song.
SMASH Magazine: Have you ever written a song that surprised even you? How did it happen?
Jimmy Mallia: I have a song called “It All Matters To Me”. It is unlike any of my other songs, both lyrically and in melody. The melody is a throwback to the sound of the band Bread from the 70s. I don't know how the melody came to me, and it is unlike any of my other songs.
SMASH Magazine: What’s a lyric you wrote that means the most to you, and why?
Jimmy Mallia: The line “I’ll take God’s Will not mine”. From my song Hey Hey. If so, try to live in God’s will more than living in my Will; life is better. I try to live by that line.
SMASH Magazine: Can you describe your songwriting process in three words?
Jimmy Mallia: Spontaneous. Inspired. Flowing.
SMASH Magazine: Has performing live ever changed the way you feel about one of your songs?
Jimmy Mallia: I feel more of the song when I sing live.
SMASH Magazine: What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced as an artist?
Jimmy Mallia: Figuring out how best to get my songs heard in this new world of online music.
SMASH Magazine: If you could collaborate with your younger self on a song, what would it sound like?
Jimmy Mallia: Hopefully, it would be a combination of keeping the dream alive and believing but with experience.
SMASH Magazine: What’s the strangest feedback you’ve ever received about your music?
Jimmy Mallia: It was about my song “Bye Bye Mamma”. A not-so-kind comment about taking advantage of the death of my mother. Very strange.
SMASH Magazine: Is there a song you’ve written that you were scared to release? Why?
Jimmy Mallia: A song about my daughter because she may not like it.
SMASH Magazine: What’s one moment in your music journey that you’ll never forget?
Jimmy Mallia: Having my first released single making it to the Top 100 Emerging Artists. Stunned me.
