INTERVIEW
Built with a mix of unreleased tracks and previously dropped singles like “762” and “Stay Tune,” The Chosen One is a deliberately crafted statement of intent.
In his latest single, “DO SUMIN,” Virginia rapper APtheG has a message: it’s time to get up and do something.
Shoot something, move something, just don’t do nothing
They say they looking for me n**** but who running?
This message could be his motto, and is an idea that infuses the efforts behind his music career. A self-made artist on the comeup, APtheG—aka Rayshawn Goode—is not wasting time by sitting around and doing nothing. And if you’re looking for him? Well, he’s right here, and he’s ready.
“DO SUMIN,” with its earth-shattering bass, spooky keyboards and James Brown samples, is the latest in a growing discography that includes the 13-track mixtape from 2023, The Chosen One.
Built with a mix of unreleased tracks and previously dropped singles like “762” and “Stay Tune,” The Chosen One is a deliberately crafted statement of intent. Gritty and unfiltered, the mixtape nods to the raw spirit of early-2000s street tapes—but in the era of Spotify and self-promotion, the hustle looks different now. It has been a learning process.
From recording and mastering to distributing and promoting, AP has handled every step himself. “From the outside, you think it’s just rapping and making videos,” he says. “But once you step into music, you see the business side is huge. I didn’t know how much work it really takes.”
That work is starting to pay off. His streams are climbing, his followers are growing, and the attention is picking up. With his next mixtape on the way, AP is leveling up both the sound and the vision. “I want to bring in a little more R&B, more storytelling,” he says. “I want people to see I’m not just one sound.”
AP has bigger plans that include building a label, Get to the Money Records, or GTTM. “Eventually, I want to sign other artists,” he says. “Not tell them what to do—just give them the chance to do their own thing,” he says. “I know it won’t be easy, but I believe I can work hard enough to make it real.”
Rooted in Virginia, AP doesn’t claim a single coast or subgenre. “We don’t really have one sound here,” he says. “I pull from everywhere—Dirty South, West Coast, East Coast. I take a little from all of it.” His influences are wide-ranging—Boosie, Lil Wayne, N.W.A., Biggie—but the voice coming through is his alone
Whether it’s his newer songs like “DO SUMIN” or his mixtapes, what sets AP apart is his mentality. He isn’t running away from the hard work of building his road as an artist. He is laser focused on growth and creativity.
“I want people to have fun with music,” he says. “Whatever you feel, rap it, sing it. Just be creative. That’s what I’m trying to do.”
APtheG is doing something. Are you ready to be a part of it?
