Sailor Honeymoon, the newest artists featured on NME’s The Cover, have assembled an exclusive playlist celebrating the release of their profile. Listen below.
The South Korean punk trio appear in this week’s August 3 edition of The Cover, which reflects NME’s ongoing dedication to highlighting new musicians from around the world each week. To celebrate their feature on The Cover, Sailor Honeymoon created a special playlist named ‘14.5 Hour Flight From Seoul To London’. The extensive selection includes Korean artists such as Hyangni, Drinking Boys And Girls Choir, Jaurim and Peach Truck Hijackers, alongside Western groups including The Breeders and Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Sailor Honeymoon have no interest in pretending perfection exists. The punk trio from Seoul have instead created an environment that offers freedom from the pressure to appear flawless online, where people often present only the strongest moments of their lives, and throughout Korean culture. “If you look at K-pop, everyone has to be beautiful,” guitarist and singer Zaeeun Shin explains. “Even in terms of personality [in Korean society], you should be really polite to your family. We’re the opposite of that. We’re saying it’s OK to not be perfect and there are other ways you can be.”
Their forthcoming first album, ‘The Worst Of Sailor Honeymoon’, turns personal imperfection into a cathartic celebration. Across 13 songs, the group explores everyday frustrations involving terrible partners on ‘I Wanna Leave You’, disappearing money on ‘Money’ and tedious employment on ‘Paperwork’, while refusing to become defeated. “How we feel about society is [woven into] the lyrics, so you can find out how we feel about a lot of things,” bassist Yelim Kim says.
