Punk Rock Phenom Wowashwow Shows Versatility with HipHop Album

LOS ANGELES — She’s already made a name for herself in the punk rock scene, playing guitar, singing and opening for Marky Ramone, formerly of The Ramones, but now the artist Wowashwow is looking to take hiphop by storm with her new album, “I’m a Hashole,” released on Black Friday, Nov. 26.

“I’ve been doing music my entire life and I’ve been trying to find the sound that fits to me,” Wowashwow said. “This is my first hiphop album. I did a rock-and-roll, punk rock record a while back and recorded it with Steve Albini, who did all of Nirvana’s albums. That’s why I wanted to work with him, I was obsessed with Nirvana and I said, I have to record with him. That project, I absolutely freaking love it, it was good for that time but the way I write music and the way I am as an artist is that I write and create based on what’s influencing me currently in my life. During this time I’ve been influenced so much by hiphop culture, female hiphop artists who have been absolutely killing it.”

Wowashwow said she and her band worked together through the month of August to put together the nine tracks on the album “I’m a Hashole.”

“If you would have told me at the beginning of August that at this time right now I would have a complete body of work, starting from scratch, I would have thought you were, ok, nice, but no,” she said. “None of these songs were thought about or in existence before then. They were all written and performed the same day they were composed. I’m around such a positive energy and such a creative flow of energy that you can’t help but to create. Everyone I know, everyone I work with, they’re creatives but they're just so brilliant and different with how they think and do things that I call it unlocking the cheat code in your own creativity.”

Wowashwow said one of the first songs on the album, “PU$$I Power” is all about attitude and a level of confidence that she hopes people can take away from all her songs.

“I know when people hear that name they either giggle or they go, ohhh, and that’s simply because that word is for shock value, it’s like oh, God,” Wowashwow said. “‘PU$$I Power’ is not just necessarily about using your female genitalia to like have a come-up on life or getting what you want. ‘PU$$I Power’ is essentially an attitude and a way of life. You can be PU$$I if you want to be, even if you’re a man. If you wake up and you’re feeling bad ass and you’re feeling like taking on the world, that’s PU$$I.”

Wowashwow is also an activist for the cannabis industry and uses her platform to remove the stigma associated with it. Using her trademark sarcasm for the album’s title, nothing is sarcastic about her passion for the cannabis industry.

Wowashwow described her sound as a combination of Motown and hiphop and she looks forward to getting on stage and performing for her fans.

“One of the things I’m obsessed with and I keep emphasizing is that I am the queen of the live show,” she said. “If you weren’t a fan of me by listening to my album, I guarantee you you’re a fan by the time you walk out of the show because I want to bring back that lost element of the live show. You’ll never see backing tracks with me, you’re going to always see a live seven-piece band, you’re going to see dancers, you're going to see a performance. You’re going to be entertained. Essentially, at the end of the day, although I am an artist, I’m an entertainer at heart and I want to entertain the folks.”
