VIRGINIA - Question: What does the COVID pandemic, HBO series “Insecure,” and singer/songwriter Coco Kimmie have in common?
Answer: The combination led to Kimmie’s latest single, “Triggered,” which is so much more than just “another” R&B song.
“Triggered” is an upbeat R&B song with a taste of Samba and Afro-Brazilian-type beats. “‘Triggered’ reminded me of situations I have been faced within my own life. I wanted to focus on those human emotions with an upbeat song that you can dance to,” she said.
Kimmie was inspired to write “Triggered” while watching the HBO series “Insecure” and being challenged by her mentor, Mumu Fresh, to write a song. Utilizing her storytelling talents, the track, which is a follow up from “Come Over,” explores the emotions experienced when relationships have unexpected challenges and are faced with the determination of where to go.
Collaborating with producer Dre Zimmer, Kimmie’s arrangement reflects upon memories of heartbreak and plants seeds of healing when something “triggers” emotions. The single is mixed and mastered by DJ Dummy The Genius.
Kimmie added, “This song applies universally to what people have experienced in their lives. It gives you a little nudge to keep going and move past difficult emotions.”
Accompanying Kimmie’s velvety soulful voice, the “Triggered” music video features Kimmie and up-and-coming actor Charles Yinusa.
Fans will get another dose of Kimmie in April when she drops her debut EP, “Namaste Free All Day.” The collection contains eight songs, four that are unreleased. The comprehensive compilation chronicles the pandemic and how Kimmie discovered music to escape the worldwide epidemic.
According to Kimmie, the single “Stand Up” “addresses my feelings about racial injustices. It’s a challenge to people to challenge our humanity and asks where you stand when it comes to the treatment of people.”
Using witty wordplay, the track “Time to Breathe” focuses on Kimmie’s feelings as the effects of the pandemic slow. The soothing melody puts listeners in a meditative, relaxed state. “We were in this 18-month intensity of the pandemic, and it literally felt like you had the weight of the world on you - almost like you couldn’t breathe. But we all need to breathe & this track is reminiscent of the R&B Quiet Storm with a Jill Scott meets Love Jones type of vibe to free your spirit and your mind,” she explained.
In Kimmie’s signature style, the EP brings the pandemic lifestyle to a close with “Shine.” She encourages everyone to live for today, express themselves and find time to breathe, and simply be free.
“For a lot of people in brown and black communities, we feel that the environments we live in don’t allow us to do that. But we can start to heal with a revelation within and a mindset that we are free and can continue to be free to express ourselves,” she said.
Looking at Kimmie’s discography, one cannot overlook the strong, independent woman. Strength and determination shine through every lyric and melody. The New Jersey native and U.S. Air Force veteran reveals her authenticity and genuine love of people through her sultry yet smooth voice. As more fans discover her talents, she continues to rise in the industry as a powerful singer with a heart.
