Lizzo Expresses Relief as Former Stylist’s Lawsuit Is Dismissed

Lizzo has responded after a court threw out a legal case brought against her touring company by a former wardrobe stylist.

In September 2023, designer and wardrobe assistant Asha Daniels launched a harassment and discrimination claim involving the Truth Hurts performer, her company Big Grrrl Touring and several others. She accused them of maintaining "a sexualized, racially charged and illegal work environment".

The court previously ruled that Daniels was unable to pursue Lizzo or tour manager Carlina Gugliotta personally. On Tuesday, Judge Fernando Aenlle-Rocha granted summary judgment to Big Grrrl Touring and rejected the complaint in full.

After the decision was announced, Lizzo, whose legal name is Melissa Jefferson, uploaded an Instagram video in which she appeared serious as a written statement moved across the screen.

"Today I am relieved to announce that I have won the case against me and my touring company Big Grrrl Touring," the post opened. "All the ridiculous claims by a wardrobe assistant who worked on tour for less than 3 weeks (including a claim they broke an acrylic nail) have been dismissed."

Lizzo explained that the legal action had been "shocking" because she did not believe she would face a claim from somebody who "admittedly never met me".

"I prayed for the truth to come out and thanks to my incredible lawyers, the truth has prevailed," the 38 year old continued. "The truth matters more to me than anything, and I told y'all I will continue to fight every vicious claim that has been made against me and my businesses. I'm grateful to God and my team for another victory. I will continue to use my platform to spread positivity and light to the world."

Daniels’s attorney, Ron Zambrano, also provided Billboard with a response expressing frustration over the outcome.

"In our view, the ruling appears to minimize evidence of a sexually charged work environment by assessing incidents too narrowly... rather than considering their cumulative impact," he said. "We respectfully disagree with the Court's approach and are considering appropriate next steps."

Another legal case involving three of Lizzo’s former backup dancers remains ongoing. That complaint names the singer, her production business and dance captain Shirlene Quigley.
