The Strokes returned to New York City for a sold out show at Flushing Meadows Corona Park, performing for 40,000 fans. Beach House, TV on the Radio and Fcukers joined the lineup for the homecoming concert, the band’s first major headline appearance in the city since 2023.
Their set drew from across their catalogue, bringing together familiar hits and longtime fan favourites. They finished with "Ode To The Mets," an apt choice with the team’s stadium nearby, and paid tribute to another New York band with a lively cover of Blonde Redhead’s "This Is Not".
Politics also played a part in the event, with Vermont senator Bernie Sanders and New York congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez making unexpected appearances to introduce the band. Sanders recognised The Strokes’ support for economic fairness and fundamental human rights. Labor organizer Chris Smalls and commentator Lee Camp appeared later to urge the audience to get involved in civic life. Earlier, Julian Casablancas led an S.O.S. – Earth Is A Mess discussion at the venue with the activists and strategist Maya Rupert.
After the New York show, The Strokes will head to Europe for a fully sold out tour supporting Reality Awaits. Their first album in six years was recorded with producer Rick Rubin. The run begins with two nights at London’s O2 Arena before moving on to Amsterdam, Paris, Berlin and other cities, with further concerts scheduled in South America and Australia.
The enthusiastic homecoming, strong reviews for Reality Awaits and demand for their upcoming shows underline The Strokes’ lasting place among the leading alternative rock bands of the 21st century.
